![]() ![]() ![]() There's characters you get to know, there's personal stakes, there's flashy cutscenes and epic moments. Stories also, in my opinion, does a way better job of getting you invested in the story. Pokemon has some of that (Z moves were kinda like that and the HM system of older games tried to create that vibe) but MHStories does it more effectively and in fun and non-obstructive ways. It's so cool seeing the over-the-top team up attacks for every monster. That alone puts it miles above Pokemon for me, because all of these things also are fun gameplay elements. Riding your monsters, working together in battle, using specific monsters' abilities to help you explore, forging a bond at birth, all of that is stuff that actually makes the "monsters are your friends" premise believable in gameplay. Stories does quite a lot of things I would have expected from Pokemon at some point - not because "oooh it's the biggest cross-media franchise" but because Pokemon focuses heavily on this "monsters are your friends" premise. I played Stories 1 over the past 6 months or so and I played Pokemon since I was 8 (Red). ![]()
